IN THE DARKNESS

In the darkness
The eyes
Conceive monsters rather than friends
And demons rather than lovers

I see blood and destruction
When I look at you
I remember when your eyes
Held all that was true

In the darkness
The ears
Conceive screams rather than laughter
And gasps rather than sighs

I hear a chorus
Playing our song
But every time I turn to face the music
The volume is increased
To a level that damages my mind

In the darkness
The nose
Conceives exhaust rather than flowers
And rotting flesh rather than sweet cologne

The smell of burning ash
Encloses me within its grasp
And as I struggle
My lungs cave in
With the lack of fresh air

In the darkness
The tongue
Conceives venom rather than water
And dirt rather than my lover’s lips

The taste of blood still lingers
In my throat
From the broken glass
You fed me with your goodbye

In the darkness
The hands
Conceive a wall of spikes rather than a pillow
And the bite of a deadly spider rather than my lover’s soft face

I feel numb and calloused
Like my bones have eradicated
Into liquid
I never meant for us to end this way
I never wanted to slip
Into the darkness
