SIDE OF THE ROAD

Penetrating my skull
Your words, like a puppy
Dead upon the side of the road

Tattered and matted as a small ball of witness
His tiny ears bloody with the blow to his head
The whine he last yelped still echoing through the trees

Tiny paw prints scattered around his lifeless corpse
Where he tried to sprawl out of the way
Stomach punctured with a tire meeting asphalt
And a pitiful chest that makes inevitable attempts to revive itself

His tongue lies ajar on the concrete
The pink already dissolving
The sweet and innocent
Taken down with a careless heart

Penetrating my skull
Your words, like a puppy
Dead upon the side of the road
