SOFT SECONDS

Sandstone walls and calloused mica
Surround my medieval castle

My will is cut and dried
So I am new again

When my knees buckle under me
And my body crashes against the rocks
I am rescued
My wounds clean and bandaged

I hesitate shortly
And stand again

My brakes are shot
I’m heading quickly closer to that red light
But just before the impact
I am lifted high off the earth
And placed gently down
Once my wheels have stopped turning

Rushing out of the door
I am late
My watch screams soft seconds
As I dare not check the time again

But when I do
The hands in my watch
Move in opposite directions
And once they stop I realize
I am actually early

Brownies in the oven
35 minutes longer
And they’ll be finished
I lie down to wait
But fall fast asleep

Awakened hours later with a start
I rush to the kitchen in dismay
But when I reach that tiled floor
I see that pan of brownies
With a dozen red roses beside them

There is an angel
That has been following me
This angel makes my world
Go round

This angel protects me from danger
Shields me from pain
But most of all
This angel holds my heart in its hands
This angel is one of a kind
And there will never be another like it
Because there will never be another you
